Valley Performing Arts Center's 5th Annual Summer Arts Institute
EDUCATORS—COME EXPLORE, EXPAND, AND CREATE WITH US THIS SUMMER!
July 20—22, 2014
The Valley Performing Arts Center is excited to offer our 5th Annual Summer Arts Institute! Join us for another incredible and memorable Professional Development experience delivered by our talented and inspiring Teaching Artists. Our 3-day event will explore how the arts can be a vehicle to increase social and emotional learning (SEL) in all students, expand teaching strategies to include arts-based SEL curriculum enhancement activities, and create actual lessons to rehearse in a safe environment with positive group feedback.
Over the three days, we will:
Educational researcher, Vanessa Vega, writes plainly, “relationships and emotional processes affect how and what we learn.” Furthermore, a meta-analysis covering three decades of research shows that “social and emotional learning interventions…increased students' academic performance.”
It also comes as no surprise to researchers that the arts are uniquely positioned to increase emotional intelligence in students, which, in turn, can predictably increase the non-cognitive skills most associated with student success: Confidence, Empathy, Motivation, and Engagement.
If we hold that educators, like students, are lifelong learners, then expanding strategies and resources to be a more effective educator is a welcome invitation. The Summer Arts Institute will provide fresh, research-based, and innovative SEL curriculum enhancement activities that will demonstrate the intrinsic value of the arts for both academic performance and behavioral management.
In the past, we have had confidence that educators were able to utilize the Summer Arts Institute program directly in the classroom. This year, we want to increase that confidence by allowing more time for lesson planning and delivery in a classroom setting. We will have periodic practicum sessions where educators can try out what they have learned for a peer audience and gather useful feedback during a facilitated and structured response time.
