Revered as guardians of the mariachi legacy, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán presents a festive repertoire of rhythms, dance, and vocals for an exciting evening of pageantry and musical virtuosity. Founded in 1897, the quintessential kings of Mexican folk music earned their reputation as el mejor mariachi del mundo (the best mariachi group in the world) by virtue of their commitment to tradition and emphasis on superior musicianship and singing ability. Breaking new ground, the legendary group added to its prolific collection a first-ever mariachi opera — Cruzar La Cara de la Luna (To Cross the Face of the Moon), which debuted in November 2010 and was created by director José "Pepe" Martinez, Sr.
Opening Act: Trio Ellas
Trio Ellas is an all-female Latin-American mariachi group formed in 2006 and based in Los Angeles, California by Stephanie Amaro de Abad, Nelly Cortez and Suemy Gonzalez. The group mixes traditional mariachi music with classic romantic trio, jazz, country and other styles to create a unique, non-traditional sound. The trio performs in mariachi pants and stiletto heels and sings in Spanish and English. Their influences include Los Tres Ases, Los Dandys, and Los Panchos.
