Bobby McFerrin, son of an operatic baritone, extends the family legacy to the next generation with his son Taylor, a DJ, keyboardist and beat-boxer whose debut album “Early Riser” was released to positive reviews in the summer of 2014.
The first stop of a 2016 tour, it's the only show featuring Taylor. In the last year, McFerrin has performed with musicians from Guinea, Mali, and Benin, Chick Corea and conducted Gershwin. In recent years, beginning with a tour for his most recent album, “spirityouall,” McFerrin has called on his audience members to join him as singing partners.
“Yeah, I like to get folks singing,” he told the Boston Globe. “I can’t help myself. I think music is such a powerful tool for communication and brings people together. Even strangers can create a heavenly sound together. It’s a little selfish on my part — after doing solo work for so long, I love the sound of many voices coming back at me.” The Los Angeles Times saw McFerrin;s move as something unique: “Bobby McFerrin’s greatest gift to his audience may be changing them from spectators into celebrants and transforming a concert hall into a playground, a village center, a joyous space.”
