The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world and renowned for its polished and refined sound, rooted in outstanding musicianship. Originally directed by Sir Neville Marriner from the leader’s chair, the spirit and flexibility of the conductorless ensemble remains an Academy tradition with the newest appointment of virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell as its new Music Director. Esteemed for its superlative balance as one of the finest and most recorded chamber orchestras of all times, the ensemble continues to transfix audiences with regal musical magnificence.
For more than two decades, Joshua Bell has enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and tone of rare beauty. He came to national attention at the age of 14 in a highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. A Carnegie Hall debut, the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, and a recording contract further confirmed his presence in the music world. Today he is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra leader. His restless curiosity and multifaceted musical interests have taken him in exciting new directions that have earned him the rare title of "classical music superstar." "Bell," Gramophone stated simply, "is dazzling."
